Physics Slam on Ice
Watch six physicists battle for the audience's applause, hoping to emerge the champion of science entertainment. Contestants will have 10 minutes to explain their research to the audience; the winner will be determined by an applause meter.
The audience will also get into the game, with giveaways including science-themed t-shirts and an iPad.
"The Physics of Superheroes" author and University of Minnesota Professor Jim Kakalios will moderate the slam. Local voice, speech and dialect consultant D'Arcy Smith and speech consultant Shirley Venard will provide training for the scientist contestants.
The event is sponsored by the American Physical Society's Division of Particles and Fields, and is held in conjunction with a particle physics conference that will bring 600 scientists from across the country to Minneapolis.
