Interesting article. When I was in PA when my mom was in the hospital, I was at times appalled at how the doctors talked to us. I sensed there was - at times (though not with all) a tendency to dehumanize my mom when they discussed her condition with her / us. I suspect back in the doctor's lounge she was referred to by one of those shorthand disease definitions. Maybe they did it with all patients, but my mom is 90 - and I suspect mentally they had her in her grave, instead of seeing her as someone who has feelings, is scared, craves comfort and dignity, and has those who love her around her.

I remember saying to my mom's husband that they really need to teach some patient bedside manner in med school. They need to find some way to keeping the humanity of the patient and their family in mind.
