I grew up on Dick Clark. He was an icon, and it truly did seem as if he'd never die -- the perpetual teenager! Only after he had that stroke did I believe he was actually "old".
My home was in Philly - - and before American Bandstand became a national show, it was a local Philadelphia show. In my "tween" and early teen years, I used to come home from school and watch it and learned to dance from it. I loved to see those local teens (never from my school) dancing. The guys wore jackets and ties, and some of the girls had on their Catholic high school uniforms!
That's pretty cool - did you see the remake of Hairspray? The girls were running home in their uniforms to watch the show on tv and dance - I thought of American Bandstand! Yes, all the guys in jackets and ties. How neat that you've known him for so long!
I did not see the remake of Hairspray. There have been interesting cultural references to American Bandstand throughout the years. Even (I think) Chuck Berry referred to it in a song! One never knows what will become a cultural icon when you are living through it. You only find out in retrospect.
